Birthing Center

A Very Special Place to Have a Baby...

The Birthing Center at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital offers every woman and her family personalized care to meet her individual wishes and medical needs.

Our goal is to give each woman and her family the support and care needed to make the birthing experience one filled with a lifetime of fond memories, all in a homelike, relaxed atmosphere.

The Birthing Center at APD is one of the top birthing centers in the nation for patient satisfaction, according to independent surveyor Press Ganey Associates.

Who Will Deliver My Baby?

At APD, the doctor or nurse midwife you choose for prenatal care is most likely the same provider who will be delivering your baby. Time and again women who have given birth at APD tell us that, aside from the excellent family-focused care, they appreciate not having to guess or worry about who will be delivering their baby.

What Are the Rooms Like?

Our LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) rooms are designed for comfort, privacy and family togetherness. Each room is equipped with a birthing bed designed to facilitate labor, a private bathroom, a bassinette, a rocking chair and accomodations for visitors and an overnight guest. Beginning immediately after birth, babies "room in" to bond with their new family.

Comfort and Choice

The Birthing Center's jaccuzi tub is available for laboring mothers. They may also choose a water birth. All mothers receive a complimentary postpartum massage, and a VIP dinner. Visitors can use the Gloria Green Family Room to gather when moms need privacy.

Cesarean Births

The Hospital's Center for Surgical Services is equipped to handle all the medical needs of women who deliver by cesarean birth. We use the latest in diagnostics and technology to ensure that your cesarean birth is as comfortable, supportive, and safe as possible.

Breastfeeding: A Healthy Start

APD is proud to be among the first eight hospitals in the United States to be awarded the designation of "Baby Friendly Hospital." The Birthing Center was the first Baby Friendly Hospital in New Hampshire and is still the only Baby Friendly Hospital in the Upper Valley. The award is presented by UNICEF and the World Health Organization to "Baby Friendly" hospitals that protect, support, and promote breastfeeding. Learn more about the Baby Friendly Hospital initiative at Babyfriendlyusa.org.

Our award-winning lactation program provides comprehensive, professional services for nursing mothers and their families. Breastfeeding is an important way for mother and child to bond, and studies have found breastfeeding has direct health benefits for mothers and babies.

Our Certified Lactation Consultant visits nursing mothers in the Birthing Center and provides private consultations by appointment. Ongoing support for nursing moms after discharge is available 24 hours a day. We also rent and sell a full inventory of products for all breastfeeding situations, including manual and hospital grade electric breast pumps, breast shells, and milk storage bags.
