Symptoms of Sleep Apnea Commonly Include:

  • Extreme Sleepiness: Including falling asleep unintentionally, i.e. During work or while driving
  • Loud snoring: Which disrupts your sleep and keeps others awake
  • Pauses in Breathing: While sleeping then waking with a choke or gasping for air
  • Restless or disturbed sleep: Often waking with the covers torn off the bed from tossing and turning
  • Poor Concentration: Feeling "foggy" or let down, morning headaches

Speak to your primary care provider if you find any of the above symptoms.

Sleep Study
Testing for Sleep Apnea is by the performance of a test called a Polysomnograph, or Sleep Study.  This test is an overnight study of your sleep conducted at our Sleep Center.  This test includes sensors that will monitor your heart rate, breathing rate and rhythm, eye movement, muscle activity, brain activity, blood oxygen level, and airflow.

Treatment of Sleep Apnea

The most common treatment for Sleep Apnea is CPAP, Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure, which provides a flow of air delivered through a nasal mask.  This CPAP device is worn nightly to allow you to sleep uninterrupted by helping eliminate any airflow obstruction. Surgical options are also available if physical corrections are needed. Nonconventional methods are also available such as positional measures and oral appliances.

All Sleep Apnea evaluations and testing are provided following a referral from your primary care provider. If your PCP needs a copy of the referral form for the Sleep Center at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital have them call or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
