APD Hosts Upper Valley School Nurse Workshop
March 15, 2012—On Friday, March 9, the Community Health department at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital hosted the Lebanon School District's 11th Annual Upper Valley School Nurse Workshop. Thirty five school nurses and education professionals attended the workshop, which included sessions on Asphyxial Games in Children and Adolescents, The Neurophysiology and Development of Anxiety and its Implications for the School-Based Clinician, and Play Therapy Strategies for Anxious Children.
This annual event features a curriculum developed by Lebanon's school nurses and is held during the district-wide professional development day. “Our goal for this conference is to offer meaningful learning opportunities and to provide school nurses the setting to network with other school nurses in the surrounding area,” stated Chris Malhoit, RN, Health Services Coordinator in the Lebanon School District.
This year's speakers included Thomas Andrew, MD, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of NH; Claudia Gibson, MD, Child Neurologist at Deer Creek Psychological Associates in Thetford, VT and Barbara Van Hoff, RN/LMFT, Private Practitioner at New Hope North in West Lebanon, NH. The presenters offered relevant information that led to an increased awareness and understanding of issues faced by students and families, and the nurses’ role in intervention and care.
