Race Founder Bill McCaffrey
Bill McCaffrey was a runner, teacher and coach. He wanted to encourage fitness in young people and within families, and was instrumental in implementing an all-weather track at Lebanon High School. Bill was also a longtime volunteer at the Extended Care Facility; in 1988 he founded the "APD 5K and 1-mile Family Fitness Road Race" to raise funds for the ECF and to give families a fun way to exercise together. The race was renamed in his honor in 1995. Bill passed away in 1997, but his legacy continues at APD and in the greater Upper Valley. Bill's widow Margot is still heavily involved with the Road Race, and teams at the Race can always expect a challenge from the McCaffrey family team.
