Physiatry Practice to Open at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital

Beginning this month, a new service known as “Physiatry” will be offered at the Multi-Specialty Clinic at APDl. It is designed for patients with pain, physical impairments or disabilities who want to restore functional ability and quality-of-life.

Physiatrists commonly treat patients who have had an amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, muscle and joint injuries, and pain syndromes. They are trained to perform physical manipulation, intramuscular and intra-articular injections. They also conduct nerve conduction studies as well as disability evaluations, and provide medication management or prescriptions for orthotics and assistive devices.

Two doctors– Andrew Forrest, MD (shown above) and Powen Hsu, MD–will join this practice.

Dr. Forrest graduated with honors from Dartmouth Medical School and completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Minnesota. He has over 30 years of experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Forrest also affiliates with Catholic Medical Center and cooperates with medical groups including New Era Medicine Pllc., Littleton Hospital Association, and Manchester Alcoholism Rehabilitation Center.

Dr. Hsu received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Salem Hospital, MA, and his residency in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital/Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Hsu has over 20 years of medical experience and practices in preventive medicine - undersea and hyperbaric medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and he specializes in comprehensive wound care.

All three physicians are certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

“We are looking forward to offering physiatry to our patients,” said Dale Vidal, MD, MS, executive director of the Multi-Specialty Clinic. “These three accomplished physicians will add a vital and much needed aspect of physical medicine to our current services,” she added.
