APD Honors Addie Maccioli, RN, with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

DAISY Award

Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), a member of Dartmouth Health, has honored Addie Maccioli, RN, of the Medical Surgical Unit, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®, recognizing her exceptional compassion, dedication, and commitment to patient care.

Presented quarterly, the DAISY Award celebrates nurses whose clinical expertise and compassion make a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients. Addie's nominators praised her for her kindness, compassion, and dedication to her patients, as well as her willingness to help her colleagues.

One patient shared how Addie's compassion and support made a lasting difference during a difficult hospital stay: "Addie saw that I was upset, she held my hand and said she was there for me. No one else mattered and I could talk to her. I haven't had someone say that to me ever. She cared about my internal pain as well as my physical pain. She made sure when I was in pain, that it was treated quickly and effectively. She is an exceptional nurse, a beautiful soul who loves what she does and it shows in the care she provides."

Another patient praised Addie's care following surgery: "She was a joy to have! She was very patient with me. She answered many questions that I threw at her, walked with me on several laps around the floor. She was very responsive and made my sleepless night much more bearable!"

A colleague also recognized Addie's willingness to step in and help during a busy shift in the Emergency Department: "Her willingness to leave her own unit to support ours during a stressful moment exemplifies the very best of nursing. As our Emergency Department continues to experience increasing patient volumes, knowing we have nurses like her who are willing to lend a hand means more than words can express."

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
