Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), a member of Dartmouth Health, has honored Amy Stephens, BSN, RN, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®, recognizing her long-standing service in occupational health nursing.
Presented quarterly, the DAISY Award celebrates nurses whose clinical expertise and compassion make a lasting difference. Amy’s peers praised her for her knowledge, professionalism, and leadership. Her work has shaped the Occupational Health team and benefited countless patients and employers.
The nomination spoke to the lasting impact she has had over the years: “She has a long history of assisting employers in protecting the safety and health of their employees, and her willingness to travel to numerous job sites has directly benefited many patients in working-class populations who may be less likely to seek out these services.”
“Amy taught me how to follow up with patients who had been exposed to bloodborne pathogens, not only the technical aspects, but also in thinking of it from the point of view of the exposed person and what kind of care I would want to receive myself.”
John (JT) Thibodeau, BSN, RN, Clinical Manager of Orthopedics, Surgical Specialties, Medical Infusion, and Occupational Health Services, also shared, “Amy is a dedicated and reliable employee. Her compassion and patient advocacy are what earned her this well-deserved recognition. I’m proud to acknowledge her dedication and impact, and appreciate the way she embodies all four of APD’s core values.”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
