Simple Steps to Prepare for Emergencies

Nicole Woods, MS, EM

September is National Preparedness Month, and it’s the perfect time to make sure you and your loved ones are ready for emergencies. APD’s Operations Support Manager Nicole Woods, MS, EM, shares tips to help you prepare – before emergencies happen.

  • Make a plan. Know how you and your family will communicate during a disaster. Pick a meeting place. Talk about what to do in case of fire, storm, or power outage.
  • Build a kit. Have emergency supplies ready at home: water, food, flashlights, batteries, first aid, and important documents.
  • Stay informed. Sign up for local alerts. Know what risks exist in your area (like floods or weather events).
  • Practice your plan. Just like drills at work, your family should practice what to do during an emergency.

Let’s use September to get prepared and stay safe!
