Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), a member of Dartmouth Health, has honored Jillian Allaire, RN, of the Medical Surgical Unit, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®, recognizing her exceptional clinical skill, compassion, and dedication to patient care.
Presented quarterly, the DAISY Award celebrates nurses whose clinical expertise and compassion make a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients. Jillian's nominators praised her for her confidence, critical thinking, and calm presence during challenging patient situations, as well as the kindness and support she provides to patients, families, and colleagues.
A colleague recognized Jillian's exceptional clinical judgment and composure during challenging patient situations: "I would like to nominate Jillian for a DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional clinical knowledge, confidence, and composure during a particularly challenging patient situation. She recently cared for a patient experiencing severe alcohol withdrawal who ultimately required transfer to a higher level of care. Her ability to recognize the severity of the situation, act decisively, and confidently manage the patient's needs was truly impressive. In fact, her professionalism and calm demeanor were so seamless that one might not have realized how complex the situation was unless she had shared it herself.”
Another nominator reflected on Jillian's dedication and potential while she was completing her nursing education: "I had the pleasure of a student who is graduating from nursing school. I loved having her and seeing how amazing she is going to be."
The award presentation was made especially meaningful by the presence of Tena Barnes Carraher, co-founder of The DAISY Foundation and Vice President of Marketing and Communications. During her visit, Tena shared the story behind the foundation's creation and the legacy of her late husband, J. Patrick Barnes, whose experience as a patient inspired the DAISY Award program. She also met with current and past DAISY Award recipients and visited several Dartmouth Health organizations.
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
