As the weather gets warmer, it’s important to stay safe both at work and at home. APD’s Operations Support Manager Nicole Woods, MS, EM, shares easy tips to help you stay cool and healthy.
1. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water. Try to avoid too much caffeine or sugary drinks if possible—they can make you more dehydrated.
2. Dress for the Weather
When possible, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton to help keep cool.
3. Take Breaks in the Shade
If you’re outside or in a hot area, take breaks in the shade or in a cool space when you can.
4. Watch for Signs of Heat Illness
Know the signs of heat exhaustion:
- Heavy sweating
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Weakness
If you or someone else feels sick from the heat, get help right away.
5. Don’t Leave Items or People in Hot Cars
Even for a few minutes, a hot car can be very dangerous.
When it’s hot, look out for yourself – and each other.
