More than Hospital Food

Alice's Cafe

Where can you get a nutritious and delicious meal in the Upper Valley? Warren K., a Lebanon, New Hampshire, resident knows: Alice’s Café at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital.

“I’m retired and have lived in Lebanon for 20-plus years. I was visiting an APD hospital patient and took advantage of the one free meal a day for a patient’s visitor,” he said. “My meals were not ‘hospital food’ but rather as good as any meal I’ve had in the Upper Valley in these 20 years.”

He mentioned his meals to his neighbor, who works at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, and she told him about Alice’s Café, which is open to the public weekdays for breakfast from 6:30 to 10 am and lunch from 11 am to 1:30 pm. She also gave him the link to the online menu.

“Since then, I frequent Alice’s Cafe about once a week, sometimes twice, depending on the menu and my schedule,” Warren said.

Does he have a favorite meal?

“I can’t say I have a favorite because EVERYTHING I’ve purchased is outstanding,” he said. “The soups are perfect; beef, chicken, pork —prepared in many ways — the best; veggies, cooked different ways, great, then I gotta throw in the tasty Gretchen Melt [a grilled cheese with a hamburger patty].”

“I love the idea of people coming in to Alice’s Café, even if they are not an active patient,” said Shawn Richardson, Director of Nutrition and Environmental Services. “It reinforces our mission to improve the health and well-being of the community.”

Warren enjoys his visits to the café — “the staff that run the café are outstanding and deserve five stars” — and the staff look forward to seeing him.

“Alice’s Café is one more absolutely wonderful facet of APD. Every interface or interaction with any department, practice, medical personnel, or other staff at APD has always exceeded my expectations. Alice’s Café is part of the wonder of APD!” Warren said.
